Knights shine in hoops tourney consolatio­n

The Holy Names Knights took the consolatio­n title at the 62nd University of Windsor Invitation­al High School Basketball Tournament on Saturday.

Mikhai Barnett had 17 points to lead the Knights to a 54-20 win over the Assumption Purple Raiders in the consolatio­n final at the St. Denis Centre. Holy Names also had Galdo Tutu named to the tournament all-star team. Holy Names advanced to the consolatio­n final with a 67-41 win over the St. Anne Saints in the semifinals. Rodi Mazloum had 16 points for the Knights and Andrew Ogley finished with 12 points for the Saints. Assumption beat Sarnia Northern 45-50 to win its semifinal game behind 20 points from Kassen Byas. In the championsh­ip bracket, Cambridge St. Benedict took the title with a 52-45 win over Toronto Oakwood.

The Herman Green Griffins fell in the third-place game 69-65 to Kitchener Eastwood. Nate Carson had 17 points for the Green Griffins. Herman also dropped its semifinal match to St. Benedict 62-36 with Carson again leading the Green Griffins with 14 points.

Rychel recalled: Tecumseh’s Kerby Rychel made his debut with the NHL’s Calgary Flames on Sunday. A former Windsor Spitfires’ captain, the 24-year-old Rychelwas acquired by the Flames from the Montreal Canadiens in August for forward Hunter Shinkaruk. Rychel was leading Calgary’s American Hockey League Stockton Heat farm club with 21 points in 25 games. He went pointless but had two hits on Sunday in Calgary ’s 7-2 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Vipers biten: The London Nationals beat the visiting LaSalle Vipers 9-5 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play on Saturday. The fifth-place Vipers (13-13-12) got goals from A.J. Ryan, Danny Skinner, Zane Dalpe, Cody Schneider and Aaron Shaw against the first-place Nationals (22-6-0-2).

Flyers fall: The Leamington Flyers’ seven-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday in Sarnia against the Legionnair­es. Sarnia scored the only two goals in the third period for a 3-1 win over the Flyers in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play. Michael Andrews had the lone goal for the second-place Flyers (16-7-1-2) while goalie Zach Borgiel finished with 32 saves against the fifth-place Legionnair­es (14-9-0-4).
