Green Griffins bowled over in OFSAA football

The Herman Green Griffins’ hopes for a perfect season came up short Wednesday.

The Green Griffins fell 27-0 to the Hamilton St. Thomas More Knights in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton as part of the OFSAA Bowl Series.

Both teams came into the game with 10-0 records, but the Knights, who are ranked No. 1 in the country by Canadafoot­ballchat.com, were able to hold the Green Griffins, who came into the game ranked No. 7, off the scoresheet.

LANCERS ROLLING

The University of Windsor Lancers women’s basketball team will ride a six-game winning streak into the exam break.

The Lancers, who are ranked No. 6 in the country, beat the Guelph Gryphons 73-61 Wednesday in OUA action at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse with the club now set to break from league play until Jan. 11.

The Lancers (10-1) built a double-digit lead at the half and had 10 players hit the court in the game against the Gryphons (5-4), led by Kayah Clarke, who finished with 22 points.

STUDNICKA DEBUTS

Tecumseh’s Jack Studnicka made his NHL debut for the Boston Bruins Tuesday and picked up an assist in his first game.

The 20-year-old Studnicka was a second-round pick by the Bruins in the 2017 NHL draft. He threw a pass from behind the net to Danton Heinen, whose goal in the third period of Boston’s 8-1 win over the Canadiens in Montreal provided Studnicka with his first career NHL point.

The 6-foot-1, 172-pound Studnicka played 18 shifts in the game for a total of 14 minutes, 30 seconds of ice time for the Bruins and also won eight of 12 faceoffs in the game.

EXPRESS SIGNING

The Windsor Express signed former Michigan State University centre/forward Derrick Nix for the 2019-20 NBL of Canada season.

The 6-foot-8, 270-pound Nix, who is from Detroit, has played profession­ally in Latvia, France and Poland along with the G League’s Grand Rapids Drive.

For the last two seasons, the 28-year-old Nix has played in the G League with the Windy City Bulls in Chicago, where he was a teammate of Windsor native Mychal Mulder.

SPITFIRES ON THE RISE

A 13-game point streak has the Windsor Spitfires on the rise again in the Canadian Hockey League top-10 rankings.

The Spitfires, who boast a 15-33-0 record, now sit at No. 3 in the rankings, which is up from No. 6 last week.

Windsor is the highest-rated team in the rankings from the Ontario Hockey League with the Ottawa 67’s at No. 7, the Oshawa Generals at No. 8 and the Guelph Storm at No. 10.
