Huron Church Road construction will reduce traffic flow

$4.8M project sees a 700-metre stretch between Dorchester and Malden rebuilt

Similar to a major reconstruction that took place a year ago, traffic on a busy six-lane stretch of Huron Church Road will again be disrupted this spring for road rehabilitation work.

A $4.8-million project will see a 700-metre stretch of Huron Church — between Malden Road to the north and Thunder Road Harley dealership to the south — completely rebuilt starting April 1, said Dwayne Dawson, the city’s executive director of operations.

“It will be similar to last year where we put all traffic on one side of the road while we complete construction, then flip traffic over and reconstruct the other half,” Dawson said.

A year ago, a three-month Huron Church Road rebuilding project occurred between Dorchester and Malden roads on northbound and southbound lanes with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.

“It will be very similar with complete reconstruction — the only difference this time is there are no intersections involved and no traffic signals,” Dawson said. “It’s straight road work.”

Work is expected to take about three months to complete, he added.

Pierascenzi Construction Ltd. of Windsor has been awarded the tender for the project. The provincial government will primarily fund construction with $3 million coming from its Connecting Links program. The City of Windsor is contributing the remaining funds.

Typical construction is expected to occur for 12 hours per day to help speed completion of the project.

That stretch of Huron Church is part of the critical road link to the Windsor-detroit border that on average carries 60,000 vehicles per day.

Access to all businesses in the area will be maintained throughout construction, Dawson said.

“We are going to have notification and signs up so people will know (where work is occurring at any given time),” he said.

“We were able to keep traffic flowing last year and this time there are no intersections involved. The road will only be narrowed down through work zones.”
