Council to vote on Monday on three proposed pot stores

- BRIAN CROSS

Three more applications have rolled in to open cannabis stores in the city, bringing to nine the total number of stores proposed so far for Windsor and Essex County.

The latest Windsor locations are all called the We Store, proposed for commercial locations at 1565 Wyandotte St. E., 6038 Tecumseh Rd. E. and 1800 Huron Church Rd.

Until recently there was only one cannabis store in the pipeline.

J. Supply Co. opened its Windsor location at 545 Ouellette Ave. at the end of March, though COVID-19 precautions have limited business to online orders and curbside pickup.

There are now eight more stores applying to locate in this region, according to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, which regulates legal cannabis sales.

Greentown Ontario is also proposing a downtown store at 74 Chatham St. W.

Shinybud Cannabis Co. is proposing a store at 7833 Tecumseh Rd. E., and Sessions Windsor is proposing a store at 650 Division Rd. near the Home Depot in South Windsor, as well as a store at 35 Amy Croft Dr. in Lakeshore.

In Essex, Rural Cannabis is proposing a store at 68 Talbot St. N.

The three We Store locations are going to Windsor city council on Monday for ratification votes.

Council already voted to support the Wyandotte Street and Tecumseh Road East locations in email votes taken April 7, and voted to support the Huron Church Road location in an email vote taken April 14.

The votes were taken by email because there is only a 15-day window to make public comments to the commission.
