Mental, physical health important

-

I am concerned about the blanket message coming from our leaders of “Stay Home.”

Many people (those who are prone to anxiety to begin with) are interpreting that to mean “Stay Inside.”

As well, the dramatic headlines day after day which enforce this are having a very damaging effect on some people.

Spring has sprung and people should be spending time outside. The birds and the blooming trees don’t know there is a pandemic.

As studies have shown, connecting with nature, being out in the sun and getting exercise all do wonders to help fight depression and keep us in a positive mindset. This connection is always important, but even more so when we are stressed or overwhelmed.

I live in Tecumseh. Our population density is 245 people per square kilometre (Windsor’s is 322). For comparison, Toronto’s is 4,150 people per square kilometre.

Even with the increase in people outside in our town, it is still very easy to go for a walk, jog or a bike ride without any risk.

It is also nice to say “hello” and share a smile or wave with others as we move over to leave the required two metres. We are all in this together.

The reason I write this is because I know people who have not stepped outside in almost a month. Because of this they are not doing well at all.

Too much of their time is spent watching the news, switching between channels and being bombarded by messages that lead them to believe they are doing the right thing. They believe anyone who isn’t staying in is living dangerously.

They are stressed, not sleeping, gaining weight and becoming more and more depressed. Where will they be in another month, let alone possibly many more? This may be “new normal” for a very long time.

We need to start shifting our approach from one of isolation and separation from nature, to a more balanced life, which includes sensible access to fresh air and exercise.

We need activities that help us to cope in healthy ways, so we can stay strong and sane during these unprecedented times.
