Peace fountain installation off, Meet-a-machine cancelled
Add two more local traditions to the long list of things delayed or cancelled by the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The City of Windsor announced Tuesday that installation of the Charlie Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain — an annual occurrence for generations — has been postponed indefinitely this year.
As well, the yearly Meet-a-machine event at the WFCU Centre has been outright cancelled.
“While disappointed to be cancelling, the health and safety of residents and visitors always comes first, and it’s hoped everyone can enjoy other options this summer while we all look forward to an end of COVID-19,” the city said in a statement.
The peace fountain normally is set up in the waters of the Detroit River at Coventry Garden in time for the Victoria Day long weekend (May 16 to 18 this year).
But things are different in 2020. According to the city, provincial construction orders do not categorize installation of community features such as the peace fountain as essential.
Now, strollers and spectators will have to wait to enjoy the peace fountain’s 21.3-metre (70-foot) water spouts and romantic multicoloured underwater light show.
The City of Windsor’s facilities department said they will continue to wait for changes in Ontario’s COVID-19 rules that might allow installation of the fountain — time permitting.
Meanwhile, the children’s services department cancelled this year’s Meet-a-machine event.
Meant to promote literacy, the family-oriented annual event usually takes place in the WFCU Centre parking lot in June, allowing kids to get up close with marvellous machines like fire trucks, big rigs, cranes, earth movers and other heavy equipment.
Attendance is typically in the thousands.
