Boka to lace ’em up at Queen’s this fall

- JIM PARKER

Forward Luke Boka became the third and final member of the Windsor Spitfires’ overage class to decide on his post-junior hockey future.

Boka, who was captain for two years and set a club record by playing in 313 regular-season games, is headed to Queen’s University in Kingston to study arts and play hockey.

“I chose Queen’s to get a great education and to continue to get better and chase my dreams,” said Boka, who turns 21 on Friday. “Also, to reunite with a few of my old Spitfire teammates.”

Defenceman Thomas Stevenson, who played three seasons in Windsor with Boka, is also headed to Queen’s while forward Cole Purboo chose the University of Toronto after finishing four years in Windsor.

At Queen’s, Boka will be reunited with a trio of former Spitfires — defenceman and captain Patrick Sanvido, forward Will Sirman and defenceman Graeme Brown.

“I still feel like I’m going back to Windsor next year, but I’m ready to take the next step and better myself academically and on the ice,” said Boka, who played five seasons with the Spitfires.

JOHNSTON EARNED INVITE

Hockey Canada announced on Thursday that Windsor Spitfires forward Wyatt Johnston was one of 46 players that received an invitation to attend Canada’s summer men’s Under-18 selection camp.

The 17-year-old Johnston was Windsor’s first-round pick in the 2019 OHL Draft and had 12 goals and 30 points in 53 games while earning a spot with Hockey Canada for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

However, Johnston will not take to the ice as Canada’s Under-18 summer team will not compete at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, which was scheduled for Aug. 3-8 in Alberta. The event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
