A birthday cake was quickly pressed into double duty when Amherstburg home builder and designer Drew Coulson won a Canadian Home Builder’s Association national award for housing excellence.

Coulson and his wife Kary were hosting a family birthday celebration last Friday while watching the CHBA virtual awards gala.

Several family members in attendance had planned to join the couple in Banff for the gala until it was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Coulson Design Build Inc. won the Whole Home $500,000 to $1-million category award for a “French Country” makeover he did in Lasalle.

“It went from looking like one of those ’70s schools with a flat roof, it was quite extensive,” Coulson said of the yearlong project. “Obviously having good clients has a major impact on something like this.”

With a background in architecture, he is always eager to “see how diverse I can get with the design.”

Coulson found an intriguing challenge in an unusual home which featured orange brick, mustard yellow metal, blue suede walls, shag carpeting and ever more strange an MMA ring sitting in the middle of a room.

Each year, the CHBA recognizes “the best of the best from all across Canada.” The website noted there were more than 700 entries for this year’s awards and winners were selected by nearly 200 judges from across the country.

Coulson himself has been in the build/design business for more than 15 years. His company has been a CHBA finalist twice before.
