A man in his 90s and a woman in her 80s are the latest victims of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County.

The local public health unit announced the two additional deaths on Wednesday. The man lived in a long-term care home and the woman lived in the general community. Both had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Since March, 82 people from the local area have succumbed to complications of COVID-19. Two of them were migrant farm workers from Mexico and 56 were residents of long-term care or retirement homes.

The Windsor-essex County Health Unit also reported 41 new cases of COVID-19. Of those, 13 are close contacts of people who previously tested positive and one case is attributed to community spread. The transmission sources for the remaining 27 cases are still under investigation by public health unit staff.

There are 410 active cases in the region. To date, 3,740 local residents have tested positive.

The health unit is monitoring 19 outbreaks across multiple sectors, one more than on Tuesday.

There are currently seven workplace outbreaks in the region. In Leamington, there are outbreaks at three farms, one finance and insurance business, and one place of worship.

A health care and social assistance business in Lakeshore and a manufacturing facility in Windsor are also under outbreak.

Victoria Manor and Riverplace Residence are the region's two “community” outbreaks.

Hotel-dieu Grace Hospital and Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette campus are each dealing with outbreaks, as are five long-term care homes.

The health unit on Wednesday issued a possible COVID-19 public exposure notice for a Boston Pizza in Windsor (4450 Walker Rd.). The dates of exposure are Nov. 23-25.

Late Wednesday afternoon Hotel-dieu announced that they have “paused all admissions to our in-patient restorative care programs.”

That includes complex medical care, palliative care and in-house rehabilitation programs. Outpatient services remain in operation, but with strict PPE protocols.
