St. Clair Saints women's head volleyball coach Jimmy El-turk has got a quick start to his 2021-22 recruiting class.

El-turk has added a trio of local prospects in Sandwich high school's Mikayla Stocks, Villanova high school's Ashley Maleyko and St. Joseph high school's Jade Thompson.

“Our head start on recruiting wouldn't be possible without assistant coach Julie Ann Milling,” El-turk said in a release. “Jules has done a lot of legwork in meeting with athletes virtually, chatting with them in person and educating them on what St. Clair has to offer.”

A libero, the five-foot-3 Stocks won three Windsor and Essex County Secondary School Athletic Association titles with Sandwich. She was an under-14 national champion with the South County Bandits, was named top under-17 libero at the Michigan Force volleyball academy and also played for Sky Volley.

“Mikayla brings an incredible work ethic and high volleyball IQ,” El-turk said. “She reads the game at a level unlike many athletes I've worked with and is going to bring her hard hat to practice every day. We are excited to add Mikayla's defence-first attitude into our gym over the next four seasons.”

The five-foot-10 Maleyko can plug in at outside hitter or middle blocker and also played for Sky Volley, where she was a two-time coaches award winner.

“Ashley is a diverse, multi-sport athlete with good instincts and high attack velocity,” El-turk said. “She has played mostly middle blocker in her club career, but has transitioned to playing outside hitter and her ability to play and train at multiple positions as she grows into a long-term, point-scoring outside hitter will be of big value to our program.”

A six- foot middle blocker, Thompson went to two WECSSAA finals and also played for South County where she was a merit award winner.

“Jade allows us to add more size to the middle blocker position,” El-turk said. “Jade's spike touch and lateral quickness are two great foundational pieces that will give her a head start on her development into becoming an elite OCAA middle blocker.”

LANCER TOURNAMENT

For the first time in its 64-year history, the University of Windsor Lancer High School Boys' Basketball Tournament will not be held.

The event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the university hoping the event returns in 2021.

“It is disappointing that we have to cancel this year's high school tournament,” Lancer men's head basketball coach Chris Cheng said in a release. “Our tournament has been a long-serving tradition for our program and the entire Windsor-essex (County) community. The entire committee and I were excited to get this year's tournament running, but that excitement will have to wait one more year. We look forward to returning in 2021.”

LANCERS VOLLEYBALL

University of Windsor Lancers men's head volleyball coach James Gravelle has added two recruits for the 2021-22 OUA season.

The Lancers have commitments from Wiarton's Daniel Pickett and Hawaii's Chase Bridges-hunter. A six-foot setter, Pickett attends Peninsula Shores high school and is a multi-sport athlete who also plays for the Bluewater Ballistix volleyball club and was part of the Team Ontario Academy this past summer.

A six-foot-six opposite, Bridges-hunter attends Kamehameha Schools and was a three-year starter who helped his team to the Big Island championship and was named second all-state middle and D1 AllBig Island first team. He has also spent time with the Outrigger Canoe Club based in Waikiki, Oahu.
