FOUR WEEKS IN JAIL FOR JET SKI ROMEO.

-

Dale Mclaughlan, a 28-yearold Scottish man, has been jailed for four weeks after he breached COVID-19 regulations by riding a jet ski to see his girlfriend on the Isle of Man. Here's how it went down.

1 THAT'S LOVE … OR SOMETHING

Determined to see his partner, Mclaughlan left Whithorn on the western coast of Scotland and rode a jet ski (he had apparently never been on one) to Ramsey on the eastern coast of the Isle of Man, reported Sky News. He left at 8 a.m. on Friday and expected to arrive in about 40 minutes, but rough conditions in the Irish Sea meant he arrived in Ramsey at around 1 p.m. He then walked another 25 kilometres down the rugged island, over approximately six hours, to his girlfriend's home in Douglas.

2 A STRANGER IN OUR MIDST

After he arrived at her house, the pair went out in Douglas that night, where they were confronted by police. According to the U.K.'S Sun, he gave his girlfriend's address as his own. Mclaughlan was then later arrested at her house.

3 KEEP THE ISLAND SAFE

COVID-19 regulations on the island include non-residents having to obtain government permission to visit. Mclaughlan had special dispensation to work as a roofer on the island in September, when he met his partner, Jessica Radcliffe.

4 HE GOT TESTED, TWICE

According to Sky News, the Douglas Courthouse heard Mclaughlan later attempted to receive another permit, but both applications were turned down. During a court appearance via video link, McLaughlan said he had taken a COVID-19 test four days before his travel to the island and also had one done while on the island — both tests came back negative. According to The Sun, his defence lawyer said he suffered from depression and was struggling without seeing his partner. He pleaded guilty to entering the island when not permitted to do so.

5 THE MOMS NEVER KNOW

“He was wholly inexperienced in operating a jet ski. He deliberately attempted to avoid detection and circumvent the entry regulations in place to protect the Isle of Man,” said the island's high deputy bailiff. Mclaughlan's mom told The Sun that she didn't even know about the jet ski, and that “I just don't know why he did it — he could have killed himself. “He'll be missing his kids over Christmas.”
