Ministry issues orders to companies following fatal industrial mishap at Cantelon Drive job site
The Ministry of Labour has issued several charges resulting from an ongoing investigation following a workplace fatality at a demolition project in east Windsor.
Both the deceased worker's employer and the building owner have received the orders.
A-1 Quality Concrete, Demolition and Excavation, which employed the deceased worker, has been issued seven orders and one requirement to date according to a ministry statement.
The fatal industrial incident occurred Saturday on the site of a commercial property in the 6500 block of Cantelon Drive, the scene of a fire the week before.
Initial reports indicated that a collapse occurred at the fire-damaged structure, fatally injuring a worker.
Windsor firefighters, police, and paramedics responded to the scene around 1:30 p.m. on Boxing Day.
The injured worker was reported as being absent of vital signs. The worker has not been identified.
On Tuesday, two ministry inspectors and an engineer issued two requirements to the building owner, identified as 2616766 Ontario Limited.
Those requirements followed the ministry orders and requirements previously issued to A-1 Quality Concrete, Demolition and Excavation on Dec. 26 and 27.
The ministry refused to reveal what the orders and requirements are or what the timelines for meeting them are, saying only that the “investigation is ongoing, details on the orders/requirements are not available.”
The property is part of an industrial park off Lauzon Parkway.
The fire happened during the early morning hours of Dec. 20 with damage estimated at $500,000.
