Lasalle warns urban coyotes on the winter prowl

- DALSON CHEN

It's that time of year when coyotes are becoming more active and visible in Essex County, especially around Lasalle.

In a statement on Tuesday, Lasalle police said they've recently received reports of coyote sightings in the municipality, an annual phenomenon.

“It should be noted that coyotes are entering their breeding season, which generally lasts until the end of March when they may start rearing their pups,” Lasalle police advised.

So far, the recent sightings haven't involved aggressive behaviour toward people or pets, according to Lasalle police.

But police warned that coyotes may act more boldly during this time of the year, and more protectively of their territory.

According to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, coyotes in Ontario can range in size from nine kilograms to 23 kilograms.

Lasalle police said anyone who encounters a coyote should keep their distance. “The animal will most likely avoid you,” police said.

If the coyote is being aggressive, Lasalle police said you should remain calm and back away while standing tall, waving your arms and making loud noises. Do not turn your back on the animal and do not run from it.

Carrying a flashlight at night can help deter coyotes.

“Unless the coyote is posing an imminent threat, please do not call 911,” Lasalle police emphasized.

Those who wish to report a coyote sighting can call the Lasalle police non-emergency line at 519969-5210.

Discharge of firearms in the Town of Lasalle is prohibited. But it's legal to hunt coyotes elsewhere in Essex County, outside of town limits, all year round.
