London health board chair resigns
London Health Sciences Centre's board chair resigned one day after EX-CEO Paul Woods launched a $2.5-million lawsuit over his termination over mid-pandemic travel to the U.S.
LHSC board chair Amy Walby announced the resignation from her volunteer position effective immediately, the hospital said in a statement Thursday. Walby looms large in Woods's statement of claim against the hospital, filed Wednesday in Ontario Superior Court. The document, which includes allegations not yet tested in court, claims Walby knew and sanctioned Woods's cross-border trips.
“I am deeply saddened by the events that have transpired over the past few days,” Walby said in the statement. “While I stand firm in my belief and understanding that I did nothing wrong, my resignation is a reflection of my deep commitment to doing what is best for the greater good. I regret that these events have caused distraction for hospital staff and the community at such a critical time.”
Walby's exit is not an admission of wrongdoing, LHSC said in a statement.
Board member Phyllis Retty is stepping in as the acting chairperson. The hospital clarified some aspects of events leading to Woods's termination Thursday. On Monday, the board released a statement announcing Woods's termination and claiming the board did not approve of and had no advance knowledge of his trips.
Woods's statement of claim alleges Walby and another senior LHSC executive knew about his travel to the U.S. to see immediate family. LHSC denies the allegations and will respond with a statement of defence.
