GETTING HIS GOATEE

-

“Mail” [“Stubble Trouble,” July/ August] surprised me. The suggestion to Russell Crowe to shave off his “facial hair trend” and he will look younger ... what’s that all about? People have little tolerance for the simplest of things. Those with beards do not make fun of those who do not. It is not being lazy or frugal, as some suggest. It is a choice that should be respected by others.

Mr. Crowe and Mr. Speilberg ignore the self-appointed fashion police. And as for looking your age, is that important? Kind of reminds me of the ’70s when others told people to cut their hair. —Peter C. Oickle, Bridgewater, N.S.

In your June issue, Alistair Hensler takes exception to Russell Crowe’s facial hair. In the July/August issue, I wonder what he thinks of the facial hair that Steven Spielberg is sporting, along with George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Will Ferguson, Mendelson Joe, plus the gentleman featured in the advertorial, page 71.

Plus Thomas Mulcair, Gordon Pinsent, Christopher Plummer, Chris Hadfield, Sir Richard Branson, just to name a few.

Oh, let’s not forget Don Cherry, Moses Znaimer et al. — Fran Lavery, Waterloo, Ont.

MENDELSON’S MUSIC

Just read your article about local icon Mendelson Joe and was sorry you did not play up his musical career. McKenna Mendelson Mainline Stink is still one of my fave albums (vinyl and CD). Mike McKenna played some great guitar, but Joe wrote all the songs. Our little high school combo covered several of the tunes but “Don’t Give Me No Goose for Christmas, Grandma” always filled the dance floor at the Inn on the Bay in Milford Bay, Ont. They don’t write ’em like that anymore. —Jim Hammond, via email

TRACKING AN APP

In the last everythingzoomer newsletter I received, there was a section on useful apps. One is the TrakDot luggage tracing device. I clicked your link to the TrakDot site, then the Order Now link. It is apparently only sold through Amazon. I was promptly advised that TrakDot does NOT ship to Canada. Why put this device/app on your recommended list without checking whether Canadians can even get it? I’m not impressed! —Bill Atkinson, Winnipeg Editor’s note: TrakDot ordered through amazon.ca ships to Canada.
