Deep Patagonia
Patagonia Profunda
It has been more than twenty years of constant, deep travel in Chile in a relentless pursuit of extreme light. The light that emerges from a storm, clouds, fog, rain; that which is drawn in a fleeting, unique and unrepeatable moment.
It is the light which keeps me alert. That makes me walk for hours, sometimes waiting patiently, other times anxiously. Spending nights inside a tent, always getting up in the dark, no matter how cold or tired I am, in order to capture that wonderful moment.
In Chile Profundo (“Deep Chile” in English) and the next two books that form part of a trilogy – Atacama and Patagonia – I do not abandon that obsession. Rather, I seek to expand the quest a little further, not limit myself to the untouched, solitary landscapes. Thus emerges a new motivation that, like before, keeps me always searching.
Through these photographs, all captured over more than two decades of travel in Chilean Patagonia, I want to show the extreme south of Chile in movement, where the footprint of man is manifested in diverse forms -- in architecture, folk traditions, in the daily lives of people in the countryside.
I am not looking here for the big scenic views. I am moving away from the amplitude to concentrate on the minimum. But without ever straying from reality. That reality left by space and time, that precious second which occasionally arrives like a gift, deeply energizing me, and leaving me feeling infinitely grateful to be a photographer.
Han sido más de veinte años de un constante y profundo viaje por Chile, de una búsqueda incesante de la luz extrema. Aquella luz que surge de la tormenta, las nubes, la niebla, la lluvia. La que se dibuja en un instante fugaz, único e irrepetible.
Es esa luz la que me mantiene siempre alerta. La que me hace caminar horas, esperar a veces paciente, a veces ansioso. Desvelarme dentro de la carpa, levantarme siempre a oscuras, sin importar el frío ni el sueño, hasta lograr captar ese instante maravilloso.
En Chile Profundo y los próximos dos libros que formarán parte de esta trilogía – Atacama y Patagonia- no he abandonado esta obsesión. Sin embargo, quise ampliar la mirada un poco más allá. No limitarme a los paisajes solitarios, casi intocados. Surgió así una nueva motivación la que, al igual que antes, me mantiene siempre atento.
A través de estas fotografías –todas captadas a lo largo de más de veinte años de viajes por la Patagonia chilena- quiero mostrar el sur extremo en movimiento, donde la huella del hombre se manifiesta en diversas formas. En la arquitectura, en las costumbres populares, en la cotidianeidad de campesinos y baqueanos.
No busco las grandes vistas. Por el contrario, persigo abandonar la amplitud para concentrarme en lo mínimo. Pero sin jamás alejarme de la realidad. Aquella realidad dada por el espacio y del instante. Ese preciado segundo que de vez en cuando se me regala, que me hace vibrar profundamente y agradecer infinitamente el ser fotógrafo.
