One of the best ways to see this part of the world is from water level. The Futaleufú River just down the road grabs most of the spotlight, but for its scenic breadth, we highly recommend kayaking on the Palena River, starting from the Argentine border town Palena. “It's off-the-beaten track, and the big advantage of river kayaking there is that the landscape changes much faster than with sea kayaking,” says Richard Carrier, co-founder of Ko'Kayak. This means floating through valleys, gorges and luxurious forest with incredible views of the Andes. Highlights include camping on riverbeds, stopping by hot springs at the foot of Melimoyu volcano and the grand finale: paddling with sea lions and dolphins at Piti Palena fjord. For the sea kayakers, the coastal fjords on the outreaches of Pumalin Park are just the ticket for advanced paddlers. “Kayaking is relatively serious there due to distances and wind,” says Carrier, “it is a self-support trip."
