Father Alberto de Agostini, the Salesian priest who during the first half of the 19th century wrote 22 books about his explorations in the Patagonian Andes, put it most eloquently when describing this region's mountains: “Hundreds of peaks still sleep a deep sleep without any human ever penetrating their silent kingdom, an exclusive domain of winds and storms. And nevertheless they are the most beautiful mountains of the world.”
The mountains of Patagonia are “giants” not just for their sheer size. There is that unparalleled beauty, as Agostini so rightly states. They may not be the highest peaks on the planet, but the extreme conditions and vertical walls found at this southernmost end of the planet make their summits among the world's most difficult to scale. And then there is the sheer expanse of the Andes, the longest mountain range on Earth. This issue of Patagon Journal is dedicated to the magnificent Patagonian mountains, and the bold climbers and mountaineers that seek out their rewards.
In Issue 6 we also feature, among other topics, the stunning, fine art photography of Argentina's Celine Frers, the history behind Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid in Patagonia, and an exclusive interview with Chilean Senator Antonio Horvath, who not only is the main man behind the building of the Carretera Austral, the world's most beautiful road, but a true hero for Patagonia's and Chile's environment.
Like the climbers who take calculable risks when attempting to scale a Patagonian peak, since our first issue was published in late December 2011 we at Patagon Journal have taken a risk in launching this magazine. And frankly, with few paying advertisers so far, most of the time it has often felt like we have been solo climbing without a rope. El padre Alberto de Agostini, sacerdote salesiano que durante la primera mitad del siglo 19 escribió 22 libros sobre sus exploraciones en los Andes Patagónicos, puso la mayor elocuencia al describir las montañas de esta región: "Cientos de picos todavía duermen un sueño profundo sin que ningún humano haya penetrado nunca su silencioso reino, un dominio exclusivo de los vientos y las tormentas. Y, sin embargo, son las más bellas montañas del mundo".
Las montañas de la Patagonia son "gigantes" no sólo por su enorme tamaño. Poseen una belleza sin par, como Agostini afirma muy acertadamente. Puede que no sean los picos más altos del planeta, pero las condiciones extremas y paredes verticales que se encuentran en este confín austral del planeta hacen que sus cumbres estén entre las más difíciles del mundo para los escaladores. Y luego está la gran extensión de los Andes, la cadena montañosa más larga del planeta.
