The little village of Caleta Tortel first became accessible by land in 2001, transforming this charming town into a mustvisit destination for anyone exploring the southern reaches of the Carretera Austral, or Southern Highway. Still, there are few options for high quality accommodations here, and among them Entre Hielo Lodge stands out as one of the best.

With only five rooms, the lodge and its owners are able to pay close, personalized attention to each guest. Every day a gourmet dinner is offered made from local ingredients, ranging from fresh salmon from the Baker River and southern hake to Patagonian lamb, always using organic vegetables. Each of the hotel rooms has large windows that allow the guests to appreciate stunning views of the Aysén coastline. And now, as a complement to their offerings, later this year the hotel aims to open new lodgings on their new houseboat, the Paz Austral I, and we were so fortunate to be its first guests.

Built in a Chilote shipyard, the boat allows you to observe Caleta Tortel from a wonderfully alternative perspective. The town is seen from a completely different angle, and almost seems at times as if you’re floating without touching the ground. The iconic wooden walkways emerge in the foreground as the arteries that connect and give life to the community. The daily “Tortelina” life is perceived from the comfort of the boat without being noticed, a strategic spot to view the magnitude of your setting: Tortel is surrounded by mountains that, practically from the summits to the sea are covered in deep green.

The entire interior of the boat is covered with native wood, which adds a touch of rustic luxury. The main areas of the boat consist of a well-equipped kitchen, including a dining area and stools to drink whisky on ice, and a living room toward the bow with several tables and a large, U-shaped armchair. Upstairs is the captain’s bridge and downstairs, four large cabins for sleeping and the main bathroom.

Here, without the need to maneuver the boat, you become your own captain, cook, and passenger, allowing you to emulate the life of the rugged sailors of the southern oceans, but with all the comforts and amenities of a floating lodge.

Ubicada justo entre los Campos de Hielo Patagónicos, desde su fundación en 1955 que Caleta Tortel ha tenido un estrecho vínculo con el mar. Zona Típica desde el 2001, el acceso por tierra recién fue posible al año siguiente, transformando al pueblo en un destino obligado, y donde el lodge Entre Hielos es una de las mejores opciones de alojamiento.

Con solo cinco habitaciones, el lodge permite entregar una atención cercana y dedicada, en un espacio donde el ciprés de las Guaitecas luce en todo su esplendor, dándole un toque cálido y acogedor al hotel. Todos los días se ofrece una cena gourmet en base a productos locales, que abarca desde el salmón del río Baker y la merluza austral hasta el cordero patagónico, utilizando siempre verduras orgánicas. Y ahora, como complemento a su tradicional oferta, para mediados de año en Entre Hielos esperan abrir al público a Paz Austral I, la “casa bote” que tuvimos la suerte de inaugurar.

Construida en un astillero chilote, esta embarcación permite habitar y observar Caleta Tortel desde otra perspectiva. El pueblo se ve desde un ángulo totalmente diferente, y casi parece que flotara sin tocar el suelo, como levitando. Las inconfundibles pasarelas surgen en primer plano como las arterias que conectan y dan vida a esta localidad. La cotidianidad tortelina se percibe desde la comodidad del bote sin ser advertido, un lugar estratégico que también permite sopesar la magnitud del emplazamiento: Tortel está rodeado de abruptas y escarpadas montañas que prácticamente desde la cumbre hasta el mar están cubiertas de un verde profundo.

Todo el interior de la embarcación se encuentra recubierto por madera nativa, lo que le entrega un toque de lujo bien concebido. Una cocina bien equipada, con comedor y taburetes para tomar whisky con hielo milenario; y una sala de estar hacia la proa, con mesones y un gran sillón en forma de U; componen los espacios principales. Escalera arriba está el puente de mando y, hacia abajo, las cuatro habitaciones con camarotes y el baño principal.

Aquí, sin la necesidad de maniobrar el bote, eres tu propio capitán, cocinero y pasajero. Todo está a disposición para que así sea, emulando en cierta forma la vida de los navegantes australes, pero con el confort de un lodge flotante.
