When actor Will Smith saw this rug he could not resist a selfie, as he told his 15.5 million Instagram followers: “This piece was CRAZY... It is a giant wool rug depicting the Santa Cruz River in Argentina. Security let me know real quick they don’t allow shoes on.”
Made by Argentine artist Alexandra Kehayoglou, the rug is now on display at the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia and was created primarily to raise international awareness about the dangers facing the Santa Cruz River in Argentine Patagonia, which is currently threatened by a large-scale hydroelectric dam project.
Kehayoglou, who comes from a family of rugmakers who fled to Argentina from Turkey due tow arin the 1920s, is renowned for her textured, visually arresting rugs that depict natural or topographical locations like forest floors, glaciers, or the Patagonian pampas. Incredibly visceral to look at and feel, her work has been showcased around the world, creating patches of mossy nature everywhere from fashion runways to gallery walls.
This newest creation took two and a half months to complete, although the idea was in the making for more than a year. Kehayoglou spent a week kayaking along the river for research and to get to know the area, using a drone to get a bird’s eye view and stopping along the banks to explore the flora and fauna.
The result is a breathtaking, 10 by 4.6 meter (32 x 15 feet) wool textile that flows down f r om t he wall and spreads across t he f l oor. Depicting an aerial view of a portion of the meandering turquoise river and its green and brown banks, Kehayoglou’s signature style is evident in the tufts of thread that pop out of the landscape, creating a three- dimensional, realistic look and feel to the tapestry.
But Kehayoglou’s work isn’t just for the eyes, it’s also meant to be felt. Guests are encouraged to lay on the rug ( shoes off!) and interact with it, resulting in plenty of Instagram-worthy selfies by gallery visitors. To see more of Kehayoglou’s work, go to alexkeha.com

Confeccionada por la artista argentina Alexandra Kehayoglou, la alfombra se exhibe en la Galería Nacional de Victoria en Australia, y fue creada principalmente para aumentar la conciencia internacional sobre los peligros que enfrenta el río Santa Cruz en la Patagonia Argentina, actualmente amenazado por proyectos de represas hidroeléctricas a gran escala.
Kehayoglou, quien proviene de una familia de fabricantes de alfombras que huyeron desde Turquía a Argentina debido a la guerra de la década de 1920, es famosa por sus alfombras texturizadas y visualmente llamativas que representan lugares naturales o topográficos como los suelos de bosques, glaciares o pampas patagónicas. El resultado es una impresionante tela de lana de 10 por 4,6 metros que fluye hacia abajo desde la pared y se extiende por el suelo. Representando una vista aérea de una porción del serpenteante río turquesa y sus riberas verdes y marrones, el estilo característico de Kehayoglou es evidente en los mechones de hilo que emergen del paisaje, creando una apariencia tridimensional y realista en el tapiz.
Pero el trabajo de Kehayoglou no es solo para los ojos, ya que también fue creado para ser sentido.
