A Tribute to Antonio Horvath
Un homenaje a Antonio Horvath
Wayfarer, there is no road, you make it by walking it,” the Spanish singer Joan Manuel Serrat sang in honor of the poet Antonio Machado. This was Antonio Horvath's favorite song when we had our radio programs together. And, for sure, that was his motto.
Although I had known this stubborn engineer of the Carretera Austral, or Southern Highway, since 1982, we would later establish a friendship at the radio station and defending Patagonia from the nuclear waste dump at Gastre. A multifaceted individual, among other things, Horvath was a civil engineer, an artist, environmentalist, explorer, adven- turer, and editor of Trapananda magazine. Educated and sensitive, a regionalist politician, he was always independent in his ideas, but above all he was in love with Patagonia: its magic, its untamed nature, and its people. As a result, he was also a promoter and defender of its virtues. He became one of the most famous people in Patagonia in recent decades, and was always elected with an ample majority, first as a congressman and later as a senator. This was no coincidence; the people of Aysen loved him and respected him greatly.
The young Horvath arrived to Aysén as a backpacker in search of adventure and soon thereafter the newly graduated

civil engineer became director of road building, in charge of opening a route the government was urging to prepare for an imminent border conflict with Argentina. But he did not limit himself to that, and following in the footsteps of Hans Steffen and Augusto Grosse, whom he admired, he also carried out several explorations. The most famous was his boat crossing from Caleta Tortel to Puerto Natales. It was also in keeping with his character that Horvath was the first to arrive in January 1999 to congratulate the first Chileans to make the longitudinal crossing of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. He could always be relied upon when it came to adventures, mountain initiatives, and rescues.
After obtaining a postgraduate degree in engineering and environmental management at Purdue University, in the United States, Horvath became an environmentalist. He would then become regional secretary of the Ministry of Public Works during a time when talking about ecology on the radio was novel, and in some ways replaced politics. There was no lack of colorblind people who criticized us.
With the return of democracy, Horvath continued his vocation toward public service after discovering that his passions were not suited to the business world. Elected as an independent congressman he went on to form the “Green Bench,” a coalition of senators and congressman. It was during this period that Aysen Reserve of Life citizen campaign was formed, which he always supported as well as our opposition to Alumysa's large-scale aluminum project.
In 2001, with Horvath as president of the environment commission of Chile's Sen- ate, he helped push the proposal for a “Patagonia World Heritage Site.” The idea had transversal support and was presented through the National Monuments Council. A document prepared by Conaf entitled “Patagonian Ice and Archipelagos World Heritage Site” was later presented to UNESCO in 2007. Since then, Conaf has not been able to advance the idea due to opposition from the Ministry of Economy, be- cause of concerns from the salmon farming industry, an economic activity that Horvath paradoxically supported for years until later realizing it was unsustainable.
Over the past decade, after years of disagreements with Douglas Tompkins over whether the Carretera Austral should traverse Pumalin Park, and initial support for Endesa and its hydroelectric project on the Baker and Pascua rivers, Horvath ultimately became one of the most important contributors to the Patagonia Without Dams campaign.
The legacy of Antonio Horvath is in his work, in his example— in which Aysen was saved from two mega-projects— and in the love of the people of Aysen, to whom he will remain present while he is “making his way by walking it” in his next life. cargo de abrir un camino que le urgía al gobierno de entonces ante un inminente conflicto limítrofe con Argentina.
