CLIMATE NEGOTIATOR WINS PRIZE Xie Zhenhua,
Special Representative of China for Climate Change, has become a laureate of the Lui Che Woo Prize for World Civilization, the prize organizer announced on August 22.
Xie was awarded the prize under its category of sustainability for his crucial role in championing international negotiations, culminating in the successful conclusion of the Paris Agreement in 2015, and his efforts in leading and promoting the prevention of climate change within China, according to a statement released by the prize organizer.
Xie was born in Tianjin in 1949. He has devoted himself to improving China’s environment quality and participation in policymaking to deal with climate change.
Because of his remarkable contributions to addressing climate change, Xie has previously received awards from the UN and the World Bank.
This is the second time the Lui Che Woo Prize has announced laureates since its establishment by Hong Kong entrepreneur Lui Che Woo in 2015. Lui donated HK$2 billion ($255.6 million) to a foundation for the prize.
The Lui Che Woo Prize is an international, cross-sector and innovative prize awarded to persons and organizations who have made remarkable contributions to world progress and improving people’s welfare.
