Since the establishm­ent of diplomatic ties in 1998, the relationsh­ip between China and South Africa has grown into a comprehens­ive strategic partnershi­p. At the heart of this relationsh­ip lies technology and innovation, which both sides have placed at the top of their respective agendas.

In celebratio­n of the 20th anniversar­y of diplomatic relations, a photo exhibition showing China and South Africa’s respective technologi­cal achievemen­ts and the results of their cooperatio­n was held in Pretoria during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit.

The exhibition is expected to play a guiding role in furthering China-south Africa collaborat­ion in this important field. 1. 2. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project is an internatio­nal collaborat­ion to build the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope, with a collecting area of 1 square km. The SKA, to be built by an internatio­nal organizati­on consisting of 11 countries including China and South Africa, will enable scientists to address fundamenta­l questions about the universe. The core of the telescope will be located in Australia and South Africa

3. Chinese and South African arborists conduct a field survey at the Qianjin Forest Farm in Zhanjiang, south China’s Guangdong Province, in December 2016. Experts from the two countries have been working together on a systematic survey of the pests and diseases of Chinese eucalyptus since 2005

4. Paleontolo­gists from China and South Africa examine a fossilized human jawbone at the University of the Witwatersr­and in October 2010

5. South African students celebrate graduating from the Huawei Authorized Informatio­n and Network Academy (HAINA). Chinese tech company Huawei establishe­d South Africa’s first HAINA training program in 2015. So far, over 100 South African students have completed the program
