In a recent interview, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi defined priorities for China’s diplomacy in 2022. His main points follow:
Creating a favorable external environment for the 20th Communist Party of China National Congress
Tackling the many challenges in the post-COVID-19 era
Deepening and expanding global partnerships
Making solid efforts for the success of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022
Shaping the course of reform of the global governance system. China will take over as the chair of BRICS and host the BRICS Summit. The APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the summits of the Group of 20 and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will also take place in Asian countries. China will continue to uphold true multilateralism, and contribute more Chinese wisdom and Asian energy to the reform and improvement of the global governance system
Deepening the reform of consular services, improving the working mechanisms and legislation for consular protection, and accelerating the development of smart consular services
Continuing to resolutely safeguard China’s core interests
Serving China’s opening up and development. The diplomatic service will promote high-quality
Belt and Road cooperation, and safeguard the stable and smooth functioning of global industrial and supply chains. China will implement the Regional Comprehensive Economic
Partnership and work to advance its accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive
Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. It will facilitate free trade arrangements with the Gulf Cooperation Council, speed up China-Japan-Republic of Korea free trade negotiations, and explore ways to promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation with Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean
