Apple Daily reporters charged

The Department of Justice (DoJ) filed two writs with the High Court on Tuesday, charging two reporters of a Chinese newspaper with contempt of court. On June 30, the DoJ sued two editors of Apple Daily and its sister tabloid paper, Sharp Daily, with one count of contempt of court over an exclusive interview with a murder suspect, Henry Chau Hoi-leung, after his first appearance in court on March 20. The two reporters, Luk Yu-ping and Law Yat-sing, could face fines and jail terms. “The government fully respects the freedom of the press. However, the secretary for justice at the same time has a duty to protect public interest, so as to ensure that everyone facing criminal prosecutio­n will have a fair trial,” said a DoJ spokeswoma­n. And 80 percent said back-stabbing, verbal insults, harassment and pranks, as well as being forced to work in adverse situations, were among the most common kinds of bullying. However, more than 50 percent said their colleagues would do nothing to stop the bullying, and only 10 percent said there would be help from fellow workers.
