Hong Kong affairs bear no foreign intervention: Commissioner
Song Zhe, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, on Tuesday met Clifford Hart, the new consul- general of the United States to Hong Kong and Macao and emphasized that Hong Kong affairs allow no foreign intervention.
During the meeting at the commissioner’s office, Song briefed Hart on the successful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy in Hong Kong during the past 16 years, and stated clearly the central government’s position on some key issues. Song stressed that political system reform is Hong Kong’s internal affair, which bears no interference from foreign governments or officials.
Song said China is strongly against any foreign forces who do not respect the Basic Law and relevant decisions made by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee and intervene with Hong Kong affairs.
The commissioner said he hopes the US agencies and institutions in Hong Kong and related personnel respect the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, comply with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the Sino-US Consular Convention, refrain from activities that are incompatible with their capacities, and avoid doing things that undermine Hong Kong’s stability or harm overall Sino-US relations.
A former special envoy for the Six-Party Talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, Hart replaced his predecessor Stephen Young as the US consul-general in Hong Kong on July 30.
