Jazz from East and West converge Yan Wenliang awards seek out next generation

Shanghai East Bank Jazz Festival will kick off at Q.S.W. Culture Center. For three days, more than 10 jazz bands will perform. The 10-time Grammy winner Bobby McFerrin and his band will interpret tunes from McFerrin’s latest album Spirit You All, followed by American jazz band Mingus Dynasty and the legendary band composed by the French jazz drum-king Manu Katche, bassist Kyle Eastwood and the French jazz pianist Eric Legnini on the “Jazz Maestro” series. The “Jazz Cloud” stage will feature the next generation of jazz music, along with performanc­es by Youn Sun Nah, the Korean jazz diva who has taken Europe by storm, the German group Mo’Blow and many other jazz bands representi­ng different countries and styles. 2 pm to late night, Sept 6-8. Q.S.W. Culture Center, 179 Yichang Road, Shanghai. 021-6266-1110. Suzhou Art Museum is hosting a series of events to celebrate the second Yan Wenliang Awards. Yan (18931988) was a great artist, educator and founder of the museum. The award is given biannually to outstandin­g modern and contempora­ry artists. The curator of the awards is presenting four exhibition­s for the occasion: two solo exhibition­s of Chinese artists Cui Xiuwen and Zhong Biao, a group exhibition of young Chinese oil painters and a joint show of four artists from Spain. The museum hopes to present an overview of young artists active in the global scene, and explore their academic potential. 9 am-5 pm, closed on Monday, Aug 31-Sept 15.
