In a nutshell: Yorkshire lad Christopher Bailey has been credited for the rise and rise of Burberry, reviving it as a great British design name with global resonance and revenues of £2.5 billion. Back story: Burberry is a heritage British house, founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856, with a focus on functional weatherproof coats. After stints at Donna Karen and Gucci, Bailey joined Burberry as design director in 2001 and has since worked his way up to the top. Breakthrough fashion moments: Thomas Burberry savvily ensured wartime commanders Lord Baden-Powell and Earl Kitchener were outfitted in his designs. But Burberry’s most recent fashion incarnation comes courtesy of Bailey who returned fashion kudos — and profitability — to the business by casting bright young things like Cara Delevingne and Romeo Beckham in Burberry’s adverts and pioneering digital development. Signature style: British heritage with an artistic spirit. The iconic trench coat is reimagined every season, but Bailey has also made the clothes as much about fashion as function. Who’s worn it well: Every stylish Brit girl worth her salt, from Alexa Chung and Emma Watson to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Even the Duchess of Cambridge has a classic trench in her wardrobe. In his words: “It’s not a themed show, but all the things that I love. It’s a patchwork of different things — from the Mitford sisters to military to glam rock,” he said of his AW16 collection.
