Newton set to go under the knife

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery next week to repair a partially torn rotator cuff, but he expects to be ready for the start of training camp, the team announced on Tuesday.

Newton, the MVP of the NFL in 2015, will begin an early throwing program 12 weeks following the surgery and will resume throwing with the team after 16 weeks.

Newton, 27, passed for 3,509 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season.
