China has been making strides on sex education in schools in the past decades with several sex education books published in recent years, revealing a more open attitude.

There’s growing support among parents to improve sex education in schools and the Ministry of Education released a teaching outline for lessons, which offers stepby-step guidance on how to instruct primary school children about the subject.

However, a series of text- books aimed at children aged 6-11 attracted widespread controversy recently after a parent posted pictures from the books on Weibo, saying they were too graphic.

Published by Beijing Normal University, the books are currently in use in 18 elementary schools in the Chi- nese capital, and are sold in bookshops.

Amid a surge in cases of child sex abuse, abortions and incidences of sexually transmitted disease, experts are calling for better sex education for teenagers. Addressing this sensitive topic is still a challenge.
