Sui­cide bid halts rush-hour traf­fic

Traf­fic on the Yangtze River Bridge in Wuhan came to a stand­still for more than an hour on the morn­ing of July 23 af­ter a woman threat­ened to kill her­self. Po­lice and fire­fight­ers were called to the scene at about 7:30 am, re­spond­ing to re­ports of a woman in her 30s threat­en­ing to throw her­self off the bridge. An of­fi­cer suc­cess­fully per­suaded the woman to give up her sui­cide bid at about 8:30 am and traf­fic re­turned to nor­mal soon af­ter. It is not yet known why the woman wanted to kill her­self, po­lice said.
