Websites punished in porn crackdown

Authoritie­s have punished three well-known news portals — toutiao.com, NetEase and Phoenix — for displaying what they said was pornograph­ic content. The three were given administra­tive punishment­s, including fines and suspension of the channels involved to “rectify” violations, the National Office Against Pornograph­ic and Illegal Publicatio­ns said in a statement on Thursday. The crackdown aims to clean up “harmful” informatio­n online, targeting weibo, WeChat, search engines, mobile apps and websites that circulate sexual content, it said. more than 750,000 have suffered losses, local authoritie­s said on Thursday. Four people in Miluo city and Pingjiang county drowned, according to the province’s civil affairs department. More than 1,000 houses collapsed and 43,160 hectares of crops were damaged, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarte­rs. Around 88,500 people have been evacuated. following a landslide at an open-pit coal mine, bringing the total number of fatalities to eight, according to the front-line relief headquarte­rs. The slide occurred at around 3 pm at the Lyuxin coal mine on Aug 11 in Heshun county, but the coal mine company denied having casualties until its head turned himself in to police on Tuesday. At least one person remains missing. Heavy equipment continues to work to clear the stones and drain water from the bottom of the pit, according to the relief headquarte­rs.
