Mall rapped for misleading advert

A shopping mall in Baoji has been ordered to reimburse a customer and pay him three times the value of his purchase in compensati­on due to spurious advertisin­g. The customer, surnamed Sun, bought a TV whose size was given in a traditiona­l unit of length in China, for 4,599 yuan ($690) at Baoji Shopping Mall on Nov 16, 2014. Realizing the TV was smaller than advertised after it was installed, Sun, who volunteers with the Xi’an Consumers Rights Protection Associatio­n, took the matter to court. He demanded the mall refund his money, pay 13,797 yuan in compensati­on and cover his legal costs amounting to 260 yuan. The court held that the mall’s use of a nonstandar­d unit of measuremen­t for television­s, was misleading and that the actual size of the TV was different from that advertised.

CHINA DAILY suspect, surnamed Zhao, told officers he took the keys to the BMW from beside a man who was sleeping in an internet cafe. After driving off, he said he became so anxious about the trouble he could get into that he inadverten­tly scraped the car against some trees. He said he then returned the car to where he had found it and emptied it of any valuables. Zhao was detained after the car’s owner called the police.

XIN’AN EVENING NEWS police officer on Aug 14. The man fell into the water at about 9 pm and was unable to get out again because his panicked dogs prevented him from doing so. No bystanders offered to help, later saying that they were afraid of being attacked by the dogs. The man was only rescued thanks to policeman Yang Hejun, who drove off the dogs, jumped in the river and pulled him ashore.

CHENGDU BUSINESS DAILY days on Aug 12 after he pushed the emergency stop button on a subway train because he was “in a bad mood”. The 35-year-old, surnamed Hu, pushed the button at about 10 pm, causing the train to come to an immediate halt and an alarm to sound. He later told members of staff who apprehende­d him that he was in a bad mood because he had been fired by his employer that day. No deaths or injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
