Marshmallow tones

-

In this blazing summer heat the soft pastel shadesdominated images up on show at YellowKorner Hong Kong’s pop-up exhibition at PMQ will probably help soothe your jaded nerves. Featuring photographs by Matt Crump, Guillaume Dutreix, Kurt Arrigo and Shankun Wu, the show is directed at generating pure sensual pleasure in its audiences. The photographs, shot in vivid colors, with a lot of marshmallow greens and pinks thrown in, are often about surreal themes like a zebra sprouting leaves from its head and meeting a pink horse in a wild dream…

Kurt Arrigo’s seahorse series, in fact, has nothing to do with the species it’s named after. Rather it’s about half-submerged horses running (swimming?) in the sea waters. Matt Crump’s Cherry on Top draws attention to the tiny red tip of a merry-go-round. In his other work, Irvine to Indo, four pictures taken in different locations are cleverly arranged to form a consistent outline of a mountain.

Expect the unexpected, as they say.

Opera on a boat

Cantonese opera troupes would perform live on red boats during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in the 18th and 19th centuries. Opera Red Boat (Prequel) tells the story of a bunch of opera actors, struggling to make a living, and, ultimately, achieving recognition.

The performance is free to the public. If you have more time on your hands you might want to plan a weekend getaway around the show. Stay a night or two on Lantau island, visit its ancient temples and trees which have stood there for hundreds of years and soak in the fresh air and green landscape of the countryside.
