- By CHINA DAILY

The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong re-elected veteran publisher Lee Cho-jat as president and senior media professional Keith Kam Woonting as chairman on Wednesday.

At its 63rd annual general meeting held on Wednesday, the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong also elected Siu Sai-wo and Alice Kwok as vice-chairmen.

Other office-bearers elected were Honorary Secretary Yin Shuguang and Honorary Treasurer Eric Lai. The society also re-appointed Lau Chikuen, associate dean of communication and principal lecturer at the Department of Journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University, as executive director. Lo Winghung from Sing Tao Daily was re-appointed as spokesman.

Publisher and Editor-inChief of China Daily Hong Kong Edition Zhou Li will continue to serve as one of the society’s 14 council members.

Other council members are Alan Lo (AM730), Zhang Jieling (Hong Kong Commercial Daily) , Alice Kwok (Hong Kong Economic Journal), Eric Lai (Hong Kong Economic Times) , Keith Kam (Ming Pao Daily News), Gu Zhuoheng (Sing Pao Daily News), Siu Sai-wo (Sing Tao Daily and The Standard) , Lo Winghung (Sing Tao Daily), Alex Ho (South China Morning Post), Chow Chung-yan (South China Morning Post), Yu Shijun (Ta Kung Pao), Yin Shuguang (Wen Wei Po), and Chung Wan-ching (The New Evening Post).

The society, established in 1954, has 14 member newspapers. It vows to continue to raise professional standards of journalism and safeguard the interests of the industry.

Responding to debates on a “harsh winter for media” and “print media is dead” in recent years, the society has made efforts to illustrate the fact that traditional media has credibility with fair and objective reports, which cannot be easily replaced.

The society has been organizing the annual Hong Kong News Awards competition, in recognition of the outstanding work of journalists.

Last year’s competition received an overwhelming response from the industry with more than 630 entries submitted.
