Huang Kunming, the newly appointed head of the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, said on Monday that efforts should be made to better study and report the spirit and meaning of the 19th CPC National Congress.

The understanding and reporting of the spirit of the congress should be the upmost political mission for the country’s ideological and cultural front, Huang said at a department meeting in Beijing.

Studying, reporting and implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era should be the focus, and these efforts should quickly spur a wave of enthusiasm throughout the nation, the Party and the public, he added.

The 19th CPC National Congress was held from Oct 18 to 24 in Beijing.

It introduced the new Thought into the Party’s Constitution, outlined China’s development path for the upcoming decades and elected a new CPC Central Committee.

On Wednesday, at the first plenary session of the new Central Committee, a new 25-member Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee was elected.

Huang, former executive deputy head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, was elected as a member of the Political Bureau.

At Monday’s meeting, he said that the achievements of the congress have great significance in motivating the Party, the country and its people to be more confident in China’s path, guiding theories, political systems and culture. It will also have great importance in pushing China forward and creating a better future, he said. Huang said that publicity work on the outcome of the congress should focus on understanding and mastering the spirit, and applying it to real life. It has to be comprehensive, accurate, rigorous, yet at the same time, vivid, positive and practical, he said.

The department will motivate various resources to help the public and Party members to accurately understand the spirit of the congress and its core ideas. More activities will be held to study and promote those ideas, both online and offline, to make sure they take root in people’s hearts, Huang said.

On Monday, Huang also attended a meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the top legislature. The meeting stressed the importance of studying and applying the spirit of the Party congress and required legislatures nationwide to fully carry out their duties as granted by China’s Constitution, according to a news release.

The Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference — the country’s top political advisory body — the Central Military Commission and the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection also held meetings on Monday to study and promote the spirit of the congress.
