This Day, That Year
Editor’s Note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up policy.
In 1978, China had less than one television set per 100 people.
In 1983, China Central Television’s annual Spring Festival Gala premiered; it remains the most popular program on Chinese television. CCTV began broadcasting in May 1958.
In 1987, China overtook Japan as the world’s largest manufacturer of TVs. Since then, China has pioneered many technologies related to television and other home appliances.
In 2016, China produced 58 percent of the world’s TV sets, 65 percent of its refrigerators and 44 percent of its washing machines.
Homegrown brands such as Haier and Hisense have been expanding their global presence.
Last week, Haier opened its Silicon Valley Innovation Center in Redwood city in the United States. It is the
North American hub for all of Haier’s advanced technology outreach. The company’s global revenue rose 20 percent year-on-year to about 242 billion yuan ($37.6 billion) last year thanks to its expanding share in the highend market. In 2016, Haier acquired GE Appliances for $5.6 billion.
Another electronic giant, Hisense, has rapidly expanded its business to more than 130 countries and regions around the world. To further strengthen its global exposure and awareness, Hisense has become an official sponsor of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The partnership is expected to see the brand reach more than 200 countries and regions.
