Legislators urged to work pragmatically, efficiently
The Legislative Council should improve its efficiency and work pragmatically, the central government’s top liaison official in Hong Kong urged on Monday.
Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, addressing his luncheon with cross-sector LegCo members, said the council helps the government promote policies favorable to economic and livelihood developments.
Wang hoped LegCo members can be more efficient in deliberating government submissions and more pragmatic in carrying out their work.
“Decisions should be made after deliberation. And actions should be taken after the decisions are made,” Wang expressed his hope to the legislators.
Progress has been made in terms of efficiency, he said. Wang used last year’s HK$3.6 billion recurrent education funding approval as an example; the amount was passed just half month after the government proposal was tabled to LegCo. This exemplified a favorable situation, Wang said.
He said LegCo should be rational in supervising the government and proactive in supporting the government as it delivered on its policies.
The central government believed pragmatism and cooperation will be written into the LegCo’s core values, Wang said.
LegCo has acted as a bridge between the government and people of Hong Kong throughout the more than 20 years since the establishment of the SAR, Wang said.
The central government and people of Hong Kong hope the LegCo members objectively reflect demands and concerns from all sectors, and are open to discussions with the government led by Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.
Wang also urged the legislators to make a continuous effort to work for the collective benefit of the people of Hong Kong.
