The central government’s top representative body in Hong Kong on Tuesday pledged to implement President Xi Jinping’s important instruction on the city’s transformation into an innovation and technology hub, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.

The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region issued the statement after studying the speech Xi gave at the opening of the 19th Meeting of the Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 14th Meeting of the Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The remarks are of great significance in regard to the Liaison Office’s support for Hong Kong’s bid to become an international inno-tech hub under the “one country, two systems” principle, the statement reads.

Earlier, in response to a letter written by 24 Hong Kongbased academicians from the CAS and CAE, Xi issued an instruction to support Hong Kong’s transformation into an international center for innovation and technology.
