Guangzhou OED Technologies Inc, a major electronic-paper display supplier based in Guangdong province, took a significant stride in its innovation efforts on Tuesday with the launch of its advanced color e-paper technology, a breakthrough that will help it tap new growth seams.

According to Chen Yu, general manager of Guangzhou OED Technologies, the color e-paper technology will have widespread applications in various sectors. “The technology will be used in educational material displays, electronic price tags, outdoor and indoor advertising, smart furniture and wearables,” said Chen.

The color e-paper display is of high resolution and nearly zero-power consumption, marking a huge breakthrough from the traditional black and white displays, said Chen.

“The electrophoresis e-papers are widely used for electronic book displays. This will help us to make electronic books with colored displays,” he added. The company will begin volume production of color e-paper displays later this year.

“E-paper will help tackle the problems related to environmental pollution. We will promote the use of such color epaper displays in the near future,” said Chen. The color e-paper display will work for more than six months without any power consumption and it can be recharged with solar power.

Currently, the technology can only be used for static displays, according to the company.

“We will make more efforts to improve the resolution of color e-paper displays in the future. Moreover, the technology will be used in video displays in the near future,” said Chen.

Guangzhou OED Technologies has also developed the world’s first graphene electronic paper, the world’s strongest and lightest known material.

China has made a huge breakthrough in research and development of color e-paper technology in recent years. Earlier in May, color e-paper technology that is used in video displays was developed by a team led by Zhou Guofu, a professor with the South China Normal University and exhibited during the Display Week in Los Angeles.

According to Zhou, the team has developed various colored inks, including cyan, magenta, yellow and black, that enable high resolution video display.
