On June 27, 2012, the country’s first manned deepsea submersible, Jiaolong, reached its deepest depth — 7,062 meters — in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean. 25/35 17/26 29/36 26/37 21/29 26/36 27/35 26/35 21/28 27/35 27/36 17/27 26/35 15/30 28/33 26/33 18/25 20/30 15/25 15/23 27/32 28/36 29/33 25/34 23/32 26/32 C T S S C C C C C C C R C S Sh C Sh Sh D D S S C Sh T C Shanghai Shenyang Shenzhen Shijiazhuang Suzhou Taipei Taiyuan Tianjin Urumqi Wuhan Xi'an Xiamen Xining Yantai Yinchuan Zhengzhou Zhuhai Athens Berlin Brussels Geneva Istanbul London Madrid Moscow Paris Rome Vienna

Its mission highlighted the country’s capacity to explore 99.8 percent of the ocean floor.

The photo from June 2, 2012, showed the submersible ready for a dive test in Jiangyin, Jiangsu province.

Developed by Chinese designers who started work on the project in 2002, Jiaolong entered service in 2010, making China the fifth country to have deep-sea exploration technology after the United States, France, Russia and Japan. 28/37 21/31 27/33 26/39 27/33 26/33 18/35 24/37 20/30 28/35 20/34 25/33 13/29 19/30 21/33 24/35 26/32 20/29 16/22 12/22 15/22 23/31 15/18 22/29 13/28 16/25 18/24 16/18 C C C C D C S O S C C C C C C C C D C S S D S C S S S D 28/35 19/29 27/33 26/37 26/28 26/33 20/33 23/34 23/33 28/36 22/33 25/33 15/28 22/27 21/29 26/34 26/32 22/30 16/21 14/24 16/20 24/29 15/20 20/28 14/28 16/25 19/24 14/16 C C Sh S O S S O S C D C D C C C S D O S S D S D S S S D

Scientists believe the sea at depths of 4,000 to 6,000 meters holds abundant deposits of rare metals and methane hydrate, a form of natural gas bound in ice that could serve as a new energy source.

To accelerate the country’s deep-sea exploration, the China National Deep Sea Center in Qingdao, Shandong province, serves as a WEDNESDAY THURSDAY Abu Dhabi 27/42 Bangkok 26/33 Colombo 27/30 Dubai 30/41 Hanoi 25/33 Islamabad 26/39 Jakarta 24/32 Karachi 28/37 Kuala Lumpur 23/29 Manila 25/33 Mumbai 26/31 New Delhi 29/33 Pyongyang 18/29 Riyadh 25/42 Seoul 21/27 Singapore 25/30 Sydney 11/17 Teheran 26/38 Tokyo 23/32 Wellington 8/12 Yangon 23/30 S D D S D S D D D R D D D S C D D S O D R 29/44 27/33 27/30 29/44 24/34 26/34 24/32 29/37 24/31 25/32 26/31 28/34 21/29 26/43 21/29 25/30 14/17 24/37 24/32 10/12 23/31 S D D S C D D D D D D D D S O D D S D D R support station for deep-sea submersibles like Jiaolong.
