Enrique set to take the hot seat

-

Former Barcelona player and manager Luis Enrique is to be named as the new Spain coach, according to numerous reports in the Spanish media on Monday.

Newspaper Marca said the 48-year-old (pictured) has been chosen by Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales as the successor to Julen Lopetegui, who was fired the day before the World Cup began after agreeing to become Real Madrid’s new manager.

The story was echoed by the website of daily AS.

A Monday media conference was expected to confirm Enrique’s appointment and other changes after Fernando Hierro, who took charge of Spain during the World Cup, left his role as the national team’s sporting director.

The 2010 champion was knocked out of the tournament by host Russia in the second round, losing 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
