This Day, That Year
The Master of Business Administration program was introduced in China in 1991 with only nine colleges offering MBA courses.
The item from July 12, 1999, in China Daily showed MBA students attending their graduation ceremony at Renmin University of China in Beijing.
At that time, the country only had 9,000 MBA gradu-
ates, whereas the United States trained 70,000 students annually.
Now, there are more than 200 schools offering MBA degrees across China. By the end of 2015, China had 258,000 MBA graduates, according to the Ministry of Education.
In 2002, executive MBA programs were introduced by institutions such as Fudan
The newspaper and beyond
University in Shanghai and Peking University in Beijing.
Currently, 64 Chinese universities are authorized by the ministry to offer Executive MBA programs.
EMBA courses have come under tighter regulations since 2016 when the China National MBA Education Supervisory Committee announced all Chinese EMBA applicants are required to take the national postgraduate entrance examination.
Universities offering such programs have the power of autonomous recruitment.
Tuition fees for all MBA programs will be collected in strict accordance with regulations, according to the new rules.
It is not the first time that the government has tighten- ed EMBA regulations.
In 2014, the central government banned officials and executives of State-owned enterprises from pursuing expensive EMBA courses.
However, its convenience and easy availibility poses a severe threat to our planet.
About 300 million metric tons of plastic are produced every year. About half this amount is discarded after just a single use, like carrying the shopping home.
Only about 9 percent of the total amount is recycled.
It takes hundreds of years for plastic to break down in the natural environment.
About 8 million metric tons of plastic waste is dumped into our oceans every year.
By 2050, there will be more plastic, much of it invisible to the naked eyes, than fish in our oceans.
In the oceans it ends up in the food chain and releases toxins that contaminate the fish we eat.
Countries are beginning to tackle the increasing threat from plastic pollution. First, carry reusable bags instead of relying on plastic ones.
Second, cook more at home. Cooking at home means fewer takeout containers. Third, carry a reusable cup or bottle in your bag. Every year nearly 20 billion plastic bottles are discarded.
Fourth, purchase items secondhand. New products come with all kinds of plastic packaging.
Fifth, buy in bulk. Consider the product-to-packaging ratio of your purchase, and select the bigger container instead of buying several smaller ones.
