Island sees filings, awareness rise

A broccoli varieties research project has been launched in East China’s Zhejiang province, aiming to break the monopoly held by foreign seed producers. Experts said that for a long time, more than 90 percent of Chinese broccoli seeds have been imported, at high cost. The project plans to cultivate five or more new varieties in more than 53,333 hectares over five years.

The tropical island province saw a significan­t rise in patent filings and newly granted patents in the first five months of this year. In the period, 1,346 patents were authorized, a year-onyear increase of 90.65 percent. The year-onyear rise of design patent authorizat­ions reached 122.14 percent. The local intellectu­al property authoritie­s said Hainan has organized many publicity activities related to patent applicatio­n, authorizat­ion, protection and financing services to promote the values of respecting IP, and supporting innovation and entreprene­urship.
