HK educators see key role in nation’s development
A high-ranking official of the Liaison Office on Sunday called for Hong Kong’s education sector to be integrated with the nation’s development.
Tan Tieniu, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR, made the remark at the office’s firstever open-day event for local teachers at its headquarters in Sai Wan, a day before national Teachers’ Day.
About 600 Hong Kong educators were invited to the function, including heads of local educational organizations and societies, principals of middle and primary schools and kindergartens, as well as frontline teachers.
Education — one of the central government’s strategic priorities — is of vital importance to national development, said Tan. He added the event was to strengthen communication with Hong Kong educators to help the sector better integrate with the country’s overall development, which has seen historical progress in education and technological innovation.
This can be achieved by strengthening cooperation between mainland and Hong Kong educational institutions and offering more chances for the city’s youths to join exchange or internship programs on the mainland, he reckoned.
Kwok Wing-keung, founding principal of Carmel Holy Word Secondary School, proposed that more exchange activities should be arranged to help local youngsters seek development opportunities on the mainland.
Kwok, with 38 years of teaching experience, also urged primary and secondary schools to step up education on national affairs by offering relevant courses.
It was the second time the Liaison Office had opened its doors to the Hong Kong public, the first exclusive open day organized for a specific sector.
