Modric topples global greats

Croatia’s midfield magician ends Messi-Ronaldo award monopoly

-

LONDON — Luka Modric broke a decade of award dominance by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi by being crowned FIFA’s world player of the year on Monday.

Modric was voted FIFA’s best player in the 2017-18 season after winning the Champions League for a fourth time in five seasons with Real Madrid and leading Croatia to its first World Cup final where it lost to France.

“This trophy is not just mine,” the 33-year-old playmaker said. “It’s for all my Real Madrid teammates. For all my teammates on the Croatia national team. For all the coaches that I have played for.”

Messi and Ronaldo were the only winners of world soccer’s main individual award from FIFA in various guises since 2008, both winning five titles.

Messi didn’t make this year’s three-man shortlist and skipped the trip to London. And as a new dawn in FIFA’s awards history broke inside London’s Royal Festival Hall, Ronaldo also didn’t turn up at the ceremony to finish runner-up to his former Madrid teammate.

“Two guys we don’t know,” actor Idris Elba, who hosted the show, said after revealing the world XI of the year and highlighting the absence of Messi and Ronaldo in the room.

Ronaldo, who left Madrid in the offseason to join Italian champion Juventus, was knocked out of the World Cup in the last 16 with Portugal.

Third in the voting was Mo Salah, who scored a record 32 goals in a 38-game English Premier League campaign and helped Liverpool reach its first Champions League final in 11 years.

At 5-foot-8, Modric was doubted early in his career because of his height.

“These things were not a burden, they only further motivated me,” Modric said at the World Cup. “You don’t have to be a strapping lad to play football.”

The cloud over Modric is that he was charged with perjury in March in an investigation linked to his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008.

Prosecutors claimed Modric gave a false court statement last year about his financial deals with a former Zagreb director.

But this was a night for celebration, leaving former Croatia captain Zvonimir Boban in tears.

“At this particular moment, I would like to mention my footballing idol and captain of Croatia generation 1998 and their first participation (at the World Cup finals as Croatia) and bronze in France,” Modric said, referring to former AC Milan midfielder Boban, 49.

“He was my big inspiration and that team gave us belief that we could achieve something great in Russia. Hopefully we can be the same for next generations.”

Women’s award

Marta won her sixth FIFA player of the year award, but her first since 2010, after leading Brazil to Copa America Femenina glory. She also scored 13 goals as the Orlando Pride reached the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs.

French double

No French player was on the shortlist, but Didier Deschamps was voted manager of the year after becoming only the third man to win the World Cup as a player and coach.

The coach award in the women’s game went to Reynald Pedros, the Frenchman who led Lyon to French league and Champions League glory.

Salah strike

Liverpool’s Salah didn’t leave empty-handed, picking up the Puskas Award for goal of the year for his strike in the 1-1 Merseyside derby draw in December 2017.

It was a mixture of strength and footwork. Receiving a pass from Joe Gomez, Salah shrugged off Everton’s Cuco Martina, twisted inside Idrissa Gueye before curling a leftfooter around Ashley Williams into the top corner.

Top keeper

Thibaut Courtois, who left Chelsea for Madrid in the summer, added the FIFA goalkeeper award to the Golden Glove he collected in Russia for helping Belgium to third place with three clean sheets.

Fair play

German forward Lennart Thy won the fair play award after missing a game for Dutch side VVV-Venlo to help a leukemia patient. Thy, who now plays for BB Erzurumspor in Turkey, donated blood to generate stem cells to make a transplant possible.
