low-speed maglev rail line went into trial operation in Changsha, Hunan province, in 2016, making the nation the fourth in the world to master low- and mediumspeed maglev technology, joining Germany, Japan and South Korea.

The line, which stretches 18.5 km from Changsha South Railway Station to the city’s Huanghua International Airport, is the longest of its kind in the world.

Trains run at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

In January, the Stateowned CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co unveiled plans to develop a prototype high-speed maglev train that can reach 600 km/h by 2020.

The high-speed maglev system is one of the key projects in the Ministry of Science and Technology’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) to promote an advanced rail transit network. China aims to develop its own technology in the design, manufacture and evaluation of the system.
