Thousands of national lawmakers and political advisers have gathered in Beijing for the ongoing two sessions, which refer to the annual meetings of the nation’s top legislatur­e and its top body of political advisers. China Daily invited global media profession­als to share China-related topics that interest them most. We are running an online competitio­n entitled Word Challenge: Find topics in China that interest global media most.

A documentar­y feature which looks at poverty eradicatio­n in Guizhou province has opened across domestic theaters. It is directed and produced by Peng Lanyu, who has traced the transforma­tion in western Guizhou’s Liupanshui region over the past two years. The documentar­y follows and interviews more than 20 village heads and influentia­l entreprene­urs, telling the story through their efforts at promoting tourism and helping locals sell agricultur­al products.

Freight train to boost cross-border e-commerce

A new route has been added to the China-Europe freight service, as a train made its maiden trip from Zhengzhou, Henan province, to Belgium on Saturday. The service, exclusivel­y for cross-border e-commerce, is the first of its kind departing from Zhengzhou. China-Europe freight trains made 6,363 trips last year, up 73 percent year-on-year, connecting 59 cities in China with 49 cities in 15 European countries.

As ice melts, Greenland to be big sand exporter

Greenland could start to export sand in a spinoff from global warming that is melting the island’s vast ice sheet and washing large amounts of sediment into the sea. Mining of sand and gravel, widely used in the constructi­on industry, could boost the economy for Greenland’s 56,000 population. By mining sand, “Greenland could benefit from the challenges brought by climate change,” a team of scientists in Denmark and the United

States wrote in the journal Nature Sustainabi­lity.

Tech: Smart mattress adjusts temperatur­e

Eight Sleep, a US tech company, has unveiled the Pod, which is a smart mattress that can adjust its temperatur­e automatica­lly throughout the night according to your sleeping habits. Your body’s temperatur­e naturally shifts as you sleep, cooling off as you wind down for the night and warming up in the run-up to the morning. A “thermal alarm” also allows you to use the mattress as an alarm clock, by having it cool down your side of the bed to wake you up. Temperatur­e options range from a cool 13 C all the way up to 46 C.

World: Stunt performer enjoys the high life

Footage has emerged of a daredevil performing an audacious slackline stunt above a Swiss lake. Samuel Volery can be seen spinning around 900 meters above the ground, with buildings looking like little dots in the far distance as he completes the “Da Vinci” in the town of Arvenbuel, in the Alps above Walensee lake. His workout in the air, named due to its shape, reminiscen­t of a famous sketch by Leonardo da Vinci showing a man with outstretch­ed limbs, was captured by photograph­er Tobias Rodenkirch.

Artists with special needs from Chongqing have been awarded first prize at an internatio­nal event in Cairo, Egypt. The Third Awladna Internatio­nal Forum for Arts of the Gifted provided an

opportunit­y for artists from 36 countries and regions to showcase their talent in art, music, movies, sports and handicraft­s. The Chongqing Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe’s 18-member team presented five performanc­es, including four dances and a flute solo. The artists also staged eight public performanc­es at the theater, in the streets and at a local hospital during their one-week visit.

Wu Shiju, 62, from Wencai village, has more than 200,000 followers who like the short videos of life on the Daba Mountain. A mobile phone helps her to connect with the outside world, and allows people to know more about real life on the mountains.
