Museum’s ancient relic memes come alive

A series of memes of ancient relics produced by the Gansu Provincial Museum in Lanzhou, Gansu province, has been hailed by netizens, saying that they “make relics come alive”. The group of images used as memes includes wooden chess players from the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24) and a colored pottery man from the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The museum’s deputy curator Ban Rui told the Lanzhou Morning News that the macros used online not only bring the cultural relics closer to the public but also broaden the museum’s influence.

Documentar­y comes to Netflix

The documentar­y series Flavorful Origins showcases the tradition-steeped ingredient­s of the Chaoshan region of Guangdong province and those who continue the tradition. Translated into English from Mandarin, the documentar­y series arrived on Netflix, the streaming service, last month. The 20 episodes of Flavorful Origins are directed by Chen Xiaoqing, acclaimed for his previous documentar­y food series A Bite of China. Each episode features an ingredient specific to the coastal region of Guangdong and delves into how the ingredient is harvested, prepared and incorporat­ed into different dishes.

Journey to the West, Unruly Heroes tells the adventure of four opposed, implausibl­e heroes who must collect scroll fragments and travel to strange worlds to restore balance … or die trying. Created by Magic Design Studios in France, the game is another example of internatio­nal talent meeting traditiona­l Chinese culture. “It is a very dramatic tale set in a vast, legendary world. Every character is depicted vividly,” said Lu Yang, CEO and creative director of the studio. Nominated for Best PC Game and Best Visual Art in The Ping Awards 2018 and Most Anticipate­d Game at the Unity Awards 2018, Unruly Heroes won Best Console Game at the Barcelona Games World. The game has received an 80 percent positive reviews on STEAM.

A hypnotist has trained her mesmerizin­g pooch to be the world’s only hypnodog. Princess is a 10-year-old German Spitz who is trained in hypnotism and can apparently send anyone into a trance if they look into her deep brown eyes. The pooch has previously wowed Simon Cowell and the Loose Women panel, and most recently proved her skills by hypnotizin­g Drew Barrymore on TV in the United States this month. Owner Krystyna Lennon, who is a hypnotist, claims her talented pup is the only dog on the globe with the skill. But the pooch, which also performs on stage, is set to retire from public life soon.

People: He wants to make perfect furniture

Born in the 1980s, Wang has watched as his grandfathe­r worked as a carpenter. Traditiona­l carpenters’ tools, such as an ax, saw and chisel, made a lasting impression on him. Wang became an architect after graduation. After four years, he quit his job and set up his own studio, focusing on handmade furniture. The components of his furniture use mortise and tenon joints, a method that’s at least 7,000 years old.

Culture: China-Czech ties reinforced in art

This year marks the 70th anniversar­y of diplomatic relations between China and the Czech Republic. To further deepen cultural exchanges between the two countries — with the support of the Czech embassy in China, the Prague National Arts and Crafts Museum of the Czech Republic and the Prague Art Museum of the Czech Republic — an exhibition of Czech painter Alphonse Mucha is now underway. More than 200 pieces will be displayed in the exhibition, most of which are the work of Mucha.

A 3D crosswalk in England was painted in St John’s Wood, London, in a bid to slow the traffic, the BBC reported. The optical illusion, which creates a floating effect, was introduced by Westminste­r City Council as part of a 12-month trial.

Wang Shun, an architect from the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, dreams of making furniture by hand that can last 50 years, without using any nails.
