Digital economy to create 200m jobs
China’s digital economy has the potential to create over 200 million jobs by 2020, the Economic Information Daily reported. “The development of the digital economy not only advances an employment upgrade but also brings about new job opportunities,” Sun Ke, director of the Digital Economy Research Institute of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), told the newspaper. Sun said the digital transformation of traditional industries has become an important channel to create new jobs. The secondary industry is the major sector that has huge potential to create new jobs through digital transformation, said the newspaper. A Chinese steel mill on Tuesday rolled off the world’s largest seamless ring forging piece, which was developed especially as the key part of a nuclear power unit. The loopshape stainless steel piece, produced by the Shandong Iraeta Heavy Industry Co Ltd based in East China’s Shandong province, weighs 150 metric tons and is 15.6 meters in diameter, breaking both the world records of its kind. The product was developed by the Institute of Metal Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and ordered by the China National Nuclear Corporation. The giant steel structure used to be forged by segmented welding assembly. However, the welding joints are vulnerable to high pressure, which poses safety concerns in nuclear power generation.
